Novotel Nusa Dua presents
a Batuan style Live Painting
For its PATA dinner
Bali,
September 27th 2007 - Bali’s first live painting is presented by
Novotel Nusa Dua Hotel and Residences on September 27th 2007. Hosting
an event for the PATA 2007 conference in Bali, Novotel Nusa Dua
hotel & Residences features the first ever painting of the Batuan
painting style, with real live actors and plants.
Replacing
the traditional ‘paint on canvas’ painting, for this one night event,
a group of 17 painters of the batuan style have created a collective
effort to PATAs guests, the traditional life of Bali. Representing
Bali’s daily life of the mid 20th century, the live painting or
‘Alive’ painting is 7 meters wide by 3 meters tall, and shows 27
painters, actors and animals in action. Daily life, daily chores
and real actors depicting Bali over 50 years ago, are promoting
Bali as a destination to the PATA Conference delegates and travel
trade guests.
With
the cooperation of Batuanpainting.com, founded by Mrs Luh Resiki,
the Live painting Initiative of Mr. Philippe Battle, General Manager
of Novotel Nusa Dua Hotel and residences, supports the mission of
this website to ‘support and promote artists working in the Batuan
style’. The new Novotel Nusa Dua Hotel and Residences is the latest
of 6 Accor hotels to have opened in Bali.
The
Batuan painting style traces its roots to the original Kamasan paintings
that were done for religious purposes. It synthesizes elements of
the Kamasan painting with western techniques of color and perspective
(introduced by Bonnet and Spies) and takes these in directions that
are uniquely Batuanese. Historically the paintings have served as
a bridge between Balinese artists and western visitors. The paintings
introduce, explain and comment on subjects uniquely Balinese yet
truly global. Issues dealt with range from daily life to Balinese
mythology to religious belief. At its best, the Batuan painting
style is gripping and stands side by side with the great artist
traditions of the world.
The style has evolved over the last 80 years and been employed by
over 200 unique artists who all originate in one village. It has
a proud lineage and a number of vibrant artists working currently.
For
the Novotel Nusa Dua Hotel and Residences Live Painting of September
27th 2007, a group of 17 painters from the village of Batuan have
accepted to try and recreate Bali’s 1950’s and graciously given
their time and expanded their creativity over the limits of a traditional
canvas. From early 20’s till mid-60’s, the group varies in age as
much as it varies in trade: full time painters, farmers and students
are all part of this great effort and feast of creativity .
